Have you been rejecting your ideal customers without even realizing it?

Sounds like a weird question, I know. But this is a very common mistake made by most business owners.

I had the same issue for years. And I still see it happening. Over and over again.

This marketing tactic is commonly overlooked by entrepreneurs. But it can make a massive difference in scaling your business.

I’ve seen businesses grow by leaps and bounds after solving this simple problem. Let me show you how they did it.

The Train Station Test

Imagine that you’re at a busy train station. People everywhere, no space, noisy, chaos.

In that sea of people is a specific person. And it’s your job to get that person's attention.

How would you do that?

How would you even find them in the first place? With all that commotion going on around you?

You could stand on a bench and try to spot them that way.

You could approach people one by one to see if they’re the right person.

You could flail your arms around and scream at the top of your lungs. This may get you some attention. But not the right kind of attention. And probably not from the right person.

So what’s the best way to get their attention?

The answer is actually pretty simple.

You call out their name.

Okay… but what does that have to do with reaching my perfect client?

Bleeding Necks

When I work with a client, I get a feel of their business by asking questions like:

“Who’s your ideal client? Who would be the perfect match for your service?”

Every now and then, someone says:

“Everyone! We sell to everyone!”

No.

You don’t sell to everyone.

For two reasons:

  1. Not everyone needs your service

  2. If you try to sell to everyone, you’ll sell to no one

A perfect client has a problem, a desire, and something they really want. And your service should help them get exactly what they need.

In the marketing industry we call this a ‘bleeding neck’

It’s a problem that someone wants to solve immediately. An itch they NEED to scratch as soon as possible.

If you reach these perfect customers. When they’re chomping at the bit for a solution. You’ll never have to worry about getting new clients again.

Reaching Your Perfect Client

If you were a dog trainer, technically you could sell to everyone who has a dog.

But let's zoom in. Say your most profitable service is helping clients train their puppy to stop chewing on furniture and pooping in the house.

So, instead of speaking to every dog owner in the world, we focus on the people who are already looking for our exact service.

Making the sales process as smooth as butter.

And the absolute worst way to get through to your perfect audience is by posting an ad that says something like:

==

Dan’s Dog Training.

We train all dogs, all breeds, all ages.

And we can train them to do whatever you need.

==

See the problem?

It’s so bland, so vague… no one is going to read this and think:

“Yes, this is for ME!”

And that’s the exact response we’re looking to get from our ads.

“This is perfect. That’s exactly what I needed. This person gets me.”

So don’t be afraid to stand out and tailor your ads for your perfect audience.
